Writing a Sex Scene

Writing a Sex Scene

This was one of my favorite parts of writing The Storyteller’s Throne!  It’s such a fine line between being sexy and sensual, being awkward and being just plain cheesy!  It was an awesome challenge for me to write it elegantly and sexually without exploiting it.  To write it in a way that elevated it without putting it on display.  I wanted to have respect for sex itself … but also bring a little grit into it and a sense that these two people are not completely passive.  I totally had fun with it and have many different versions of the scenes on my computer …

When I wrote the scenes in the book, I took my time, read and re-read the scenes in my head and out loud … which I admit can be awkward in a house of 7 people!  (The things you do in the name of creativity … Ha!)

“So in the scene she’s sitting there, and I take her top off, I take her bra off, and she has those pasties on, but she’s drawn these adorable little smiley faces on them. And I forget every line in the scene. Not just from this movie, from every movie I’ve done.”

-Ryan Reynolds on his sex scene in The Changeup

I didn’t want to put it all out there on the page, I wanted to leave something to the imagination.  I think I did a pretty good job at this …

Though … in my 20’s I wrote a few erotica pieces that won awards … Under a different name … I didn’t leave much to the imagination there … LOL!
